  4.         Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
  5.  
  6. Balance  has lately become the object worthy of much  controversy 
  7. within  the  Oasis recently.   Hod  and  Netzach,  Intellect  and 
  8. Emotion:  in  particular.  And much good advice was given  as  to  
  9. how  to co-exist with people of one or the other preference.   It 
  10. is  an important issue for many good reasons.  One of which  that 
  11. Hod could be seen as Law and Netzach as Love.  
  12.  
  13. I have been distressed by statements like:  "practical Magick is, 
  14. by nature, a Hod  activity". I disagree  in  this wholeheartedly.  
  15. Crowley's  interpretation  of Magick is as follows:  "The Science 
  16. and  Art  of causing change  to occur in conformity  with  Will".  
  17. Science being attributed to  Hod and Art to Netzach.   Meditation 
  18. on the Art Tarot card will reveal this and many other mysteries.

  20. While  Magick  has  alot  to offer to  those  who  are  adept  in 
  21. Mathematics,  Geometry, Qabalah, Astrology, etc., it has just  as 
  22. much  to offer to those who move instinctively and are  sensitive 
  23. to  the  energies and images around them, those adept  at  Tarot, 
  24. Iching, and other methods of divination. They rely not so much on 
  25. the  Hod activity we call "Intellectual Knowledge", but trust  on 
  26. the inner voice of the Beloved to guide them through life.  
  27.  
  28. While things like Musick sound great when played properly it must 
  29. be remembered that Musick is a Netzach function, those who  allow 
  30. the  musick to move them through their emotions are  much  better 
  31. musicians  than  those  who  have attempted to  turn  it  into  a 
  32. mathematical procedure.  Sometimes a "mistake" sounds better than 
  33. the way in which the piece was written.  The best known musicians 
  34. are  those  who  dared  to defy the laws  of  musick  and  create 
  35. something totally new.  If nobody dared to deviate from the  norm 
  36. from  fear of breaking tradition I am afraid that music would  be 
  37. rather boring.  
  38.  
  39. Balance   is  the  basis  of  the  Work. Those  of  us  who   are 
  40. intellectual by nature, should aspire to use this Hod function to 
  41. stimulate  the  emotional aspects of Netzach.  Failing to  do  so 
  42. would  make  us  cold, calculated  and  calloused,  incapable  of 
  43. feeling   the subtle energies stimulated by our  Magick.  Nothing 
  44. more  than  a thinking machine, unable to hear The  Voice  within 
  45. because  we  feel it is beyond logic.  We would be  lost  in  Its 
  46. simplicity.

  48. On  the  other hand, those of us who are of an  emotional  nature 
  49. should  use  this  Netzach  purpose and employ  it  to  stir  the 
  50. discriminating  genius   within   us  all. Should   we   fail  to 
  51. accomplish  this task we would become nothing more  than  foolish 
  52. idiots,  gullible to the point of abuse and superstitious to  the 
  53. level   schizophrenia. We would not recognize The Voice  of   The 
  54. Beloved or the intricacy of His language, thereby falling prey to 
  55. the Demons of deceit. 
  56.  
  57. Per    chance    what   is  needed  is  for   those    who    are  
  58. Intellectually  inclined  to lend a helping hand and  help  those 
  59. who  are having  a difficult  time  expressing  the  Hod  aspects  
  60. of   Magick. Maybe making  the  time to help a fellow Brother  or 
  61. Sister would  be  a positive step in opening the heart?
  62.  
  63. And perhaps those who are Emotionally responsive should take  the 
  64. time  to touch those who are having difficulty  displaying  their 
  65. emotions.  Just reach out and hold them an extra few seconds  the 
  66. next  time  you give them the famous Thelemic bear-hug  we  greet 
  67. each  other  with.  Acknowledge that it is more than a  habit  we 
  68. have gotten into.

  70. It is far more important to have Hod/Netzach balanced people in a 
  71. group, than to have a group balance by people who are either  Hod 
  72. or  Netzach.  Thelema is primarily concerned with the  growth  of 
  73. the  individual.   Any group that is genuinely connected  to  the 
  74. Universal Order is a vessel capable of distributing Knowledge and 
  75. Wisdom  to  its  members; if the emphasis  is  removed  form  the 
  76. individual  and focused on the group, forgetting that  it  exists 
  77. solely  for the service of the aspirant, it will soon  become  an 
  78. empty vessel.
